What counts towards the required 875 hours?

Hours of instruction that are administered by a parent/guardian or by a person designated by them and provided to only the children from one family unit count toward the minimum yearly total of 875 hours of instruction.

Wisconsin’s home-based private education law states:

(3g) Home-based private educational program. “Home-based private educational program” means a program of educational instruction provided to a child by the child’s parent or guardian or by a person designated by the parent or guardian. An instructional program provided to more than one family unit does not constitute a home-based private educational program. (Wisconsin statute 115.001(3g))

All other hours of instruction are considered enrichment activities.

Classes offered by an instructor to more than one family unit do not meet the legal definition of hours of homeschool instruction. Remember, homeschool administrators set their own homeschool hours and schedule. The minimum 875 hours of instruction can be completed over the course of 12 months, and need not be jammed into the institutional school year.

WHPA provides information about homeschooling in Wisconsin. WHPA does not provide specific legal advice to any specific individuals in the context of any specific matters. It is the responsibility of each homeschool administrator/parent or guardian to read original source material and make decisions on compliance for themselves. When you file the PI-1206 Homeschool Report with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, you take full responsibility for understanding and complying with the laws outlined on that form. WHPA does not endorse or provide curriculum suggestions or specific materials for any particular educational approach.
